PANG!

Project that focuses on the study of musical scores and continues the development of graphic notation.

A holistic system that brings together research in visual arts, graphic design, innovative pedagogy, performativity, and music.

The system proposes a multiple bijective functions system. Each performer chooses an interpretation model (either proposed by me or designed by the them) of 'one-to-one correspondence' to interpret and generate the music.

These scores serve as a bridge between the clear guidelines of a traditional score and the free improvisation found in open compositions, offering a middle ground between musical proposition and composition.

These scores embody three core values: Entertainment: playing them purely for the joy of it. Research: continuing to explore and study new ways of thinking, annotating, and illustrating music. Pedagogical: as documents that blend improvisation, composition, and performance, they can be valuable to anyone interested in music, seeking to enhance or experiment with their relationship to sound.

All scores include a visual kit comprising the following information:

Musical Skeleton: What to play?
  • Staff
  • Tablature
  • Alphabetical Notations
  • Sigils
  • Symbolic Correspondences Synesthesia
Graphic Context: How to play?
  • Illustrations & Sequential Images
  • Onomatopoeias
  • Lines - Neumes
  • Symbolic Correspondences
  • Color

SIGILS

A collection of symbols that establish sonic paths through their lines, where each performer can choose their own route to explore.

INTERPRETATION METHODS

Number = Musical Note
Number = Tablature
Number = Quantity of Rhythmic Strikes
Number = Rhythmic Pattern
Number = Alphabetic Letter = Musical Note
Number = Numerological Correspondences
Number = Musical Chord

The system allows each user to select the method that best aligns with their preferences for sound exploration.

To create these musical Sigils, I employ the magical square of Saturn based on water—a 3 x 3 square containing a fixed numerical arrangement from 1 to 9.

INTERPRETATION

As documents designed for contextual improvisation, a single score can yield multiple musical responses.

They can be interpreted in at least 4 ways:

  • Symbolically: Performing a musical interpretation using the graphic symbols that may appear in the scores, using them as:

    • A: Narrative elements
    • B: Symbolic correspondences through speculative music

  • Narrative approach: Interpret music using the graphic narrative resources in the score, providing a framework and semantic field for sonic production
  • Composition:  Perform a musical interpretation using synesthetic constraints based on the color-note musical equivalence and the formal equivalence of graphic lines/elements - Character - note trajectory.

  • Emotionally: Perform a musical interpretation based on the subjective inputs evoked by each score, using those sensations as a driving force for sonic exploration.

EVENTS & CONFERENCES

The Project has been in circulation since 2017, participating in design festivals, illustration festivals, conferences, notation and interpretation workshops, jams, collective exhibitions, individual exhibitions, and podcasts.

FIRST EDITION

In 2017, an explanatory physical edition of the project was produced in a limited run.

The project is part of my graduation thesis, its first edition consisted of a package including:
  • 1 musical album of tests and experiments.
  • 1 musical album of interpretations by various musicians.
  • 2 theoretical books.
  • 1 practical book.
  • 1 USB drive with all compiled information.
  • 1 compilation edition of the first 25 graphic scores.
